My local Audi dealer quotes £495 for the cambelt or £649 for cambelt and water pump on their fixed price schedule. I also have a cambelt quote at a lower price (£295) from a local independent.

An Audi A6 will cost about $9,252 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This beats the industry average for luxury sedan models by $2,709. There is also a 26.81% chance that an A6 will require a major repair during that time. This is 12.75% better than similar vehicles in this segment. The A4 2.0T FSI is an interference engine (a.k.a. non-clearance engine). If the Audi A4 timing belt fails, the timing belt system that links the cylinder head, camshafts, and crankshaft no longer run in sync. Close tolerance engine designs allow for the cylinder head valves to hit the top side of the pistons.
Simply way to check them belt is to pull the cover off. Really simple to do. Make sure to change the tensioner with the belt. Highly recommend you do your drive belt at the same time. As for the water pump replacement, I still haven't done that. I'm up for my third belt in 5K miles, (210,000 miles) and I don't intend on replacing it.
